Welcome to Dublin

We are excited to welcome you to The Lower Decks 2.0, a Symposium on Janeway and Open Access Publishing, at Dublin City University on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 May. This guide covers the venue, refreshments, and how to make the most of the hybrid format while you're with us in the room.

Questions? Contact Andy Byers or Joan Kwaske.

Venue

The conference will take place in the Information Commons of the John & Aileen O'Reilly Library on DCU's Glasnevin Campus. Signage will direct attendees to the room, and staff will be available at the front desk to guide you as needed.

Getting There

The DCU Glasnevin Campus is located in north Dublin. You can find the campus on Google Maps. The library is on the west side of the campus, near the main car park.

If you're arriving from the city centre, public transport (Dublin Bus) serves the campus directly. Allow extra time at peak hours.

Refreshments & Lunch

Refreshments (tea, coffee, water) will be available throughout the day. Lunch will be provided on both days in the Information Commons.

If you have any dietary requirements that you haven't already shared with us, please let Andy Byers or Joan Kwaske know as soon as possible.

Discord & Online Attendees

Even though you'll be in the room, we encourage you to join our Discord to connect with online attendees and continue conversations beyond the event. A stream of online participants will be visible on a screen in the room, and Q&A will be coordinated through the panels channel on Discord so that in-person and online questions are mixed together.

Join Discord at discord.gg/jkYPfj6q6N. You'll find us under ‘The Lower Decks’. There are channels for general chat, tech support, and panels.

The ‘Tavern’ voice channel will be used for breakout socials during lunch on both days, and on Friday after the keynote, a good way to mix with remote participants.

Staff & Support

OLH staff will be identifiable by t-shirts with the Janeway logo. At least one member of technical staff will be in the main room throughout the event to help with any practical issues. If you need anything during the day, just flag a member of staff.

Recording & Photography

Recording: Sessions will be recorded and made available online. Any speakers who do not wish to be recorded should contact Andy Byers or Joan Kwaske.

Photography & Social Media: Lauren Stachew will take photos for OLH's social media accounts during the conference. If you do not consent to photographs being taken and shared, please contact Andy Byers or Joan Kwaske.

Socials

Lunch on both days is a chance to meet other attendees and the organisers. Use the hashtag #JanewayOA26 if you're posting from the event.

Thursday evening: after Day 1 closes, we'll be heading to the bar at Buswells Hotel (23–27 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2) for informal food and drinks. All in-person attendees are welcome to join; we'll grab a corner of the bar.
